Czech Republic is a member of the European Union, but it has preserved its national currency – Czech koruna (CZK). In December, 2016 1 USD costs about 25,5 CZK.
In general, Czech Republic is a bit cheaper for living than, for example, Germany or France, but everything depends upon the region and the category of goods. As far as we talk about food prices, they are slightly higher than in Russian countryside or in small cities, but lower than in Moscow or St. Petersburg.
Prices in such popular cities as Prague and Karlovy Vary are always higher than in the countryside or in small cities. In city center all groceries and department stores are more expensive than in the suburbs. If you book an airport transfer in Prague or any other town, stay away from buying any snacks or meals in the airport, because you’ll pay double. The same for the railway station – you will certainly pay more for any food than in a supermarket. Small groceries are a bit more expensive than huge stores in the uptown.
Farmer markets are also very popular among locals and tourists. Here you can buy all necessary food for the whole week – meat, milk products, fruits and vegetables are of a better quality and always fresh. As for the price, it’s nearly the same as in a department store.
As for restaurants, a simple dinner with a bottle of local beer will cost you only 125 CZK (5 USD), and you’ll pay about 500 CZK (20 USD) for a good dinner for 2 with a bottle of wine.
Here are the prices on major food items in a middle-class department store in Prague. All prices are given in CZK.
